Nicosia

The capital, and the last divided capital in the world. Museums, old-city streets, proper city food, and no beach - which keeps it real.

Where to stay in Nicosia

Stay inside or just off the Venetian walls: the Ledra street area puts the museums, the Buyuk Han across the Green Line and the best coffee within a walk. The new town matters mainly for business. Do not expect a beach; the nearest coast is 40 minutes away, which is exactly why hotel prices are gentle.

Getting there and around

Nicosia has no airport; it is about 45 minutes from Larnaca and just over an hour from Paphos, with frequent intercity buses to both. The Ledra Street crossing is a pedestrian checkpoint: passport required, and crossing into the north side for a morning is the single most distinctive thing the capital offers.

Common questions about Nicosia

Is Nicosia worth visiting?

Yes, for a day at least: the Cyprus Museum holds the island's best archaeology, the walled old town is genuinely lived-in, and walking across the last divided capital in Europe through the Ledra checkpoint is an experience no beach town can offer.

Can you cross to the northern side of Nicosia?

Yes, on foot at Ledra Street with a passport (EU ID cards also accepted for many nationalities). The crossing is normally quick; check current rules, and note that crossing back the same day is routine.

How far is Nicosia from the beach?

About 40 minutes by car or bus to the Larnaca coast. The capital trades sand for museums, food and real city life, and works well as a half-day or overnight from any coastal base.
