Cyprus by bus

Buses are the only public transport on the island: no trains, no metro. They are cheap and reliable between cities; inside cities they favor locals over sightseers. Here is how the system actually works, with timetables straight from the official data.

Single ticket
Around 1.50 EUR in cities; buy from the driver, cash preferred.
Day pass
City day passes cost about 5 EUR and pay off after four rides.
Motion Bus Card
The island-wide smartcard with cheaper fares, sold at kiosks and station offices.
Airports
Airport shuttles (Larnaca and Paphos) are run by private companies and are not part of these networks; taxis and shuttles wait at both terminals.
Sundays
Service thins out a lot on Sundays and holidays. Check the last departure before you rely on it.
Live times
Onboard GPS feeds Google Maps in most cities; transit directions there are usually accurate.

Honest advice

Intercity buses are genuinely good: comfortable, air conditioned, and a fraction of taxi prices. City buses work if your day is flexible. But if your plan involves villages, mountain monasteries or the wilder beaches, rent a car; most of the island's best places see one bus a day or none. A common tourist pattern that works well: bus between cities, car for exploring days.
