Things to Do in Kyrenia

Kyrenia sits on the northern coast beneath the Pentadaktylos mountains, arranged around a horseshoe harbour that has been photographed for a century and still deserves it. Above the town, castles balance on limestone peaks: St Hilarion is the one that looks invented for a fairy tale.

The region lies in the north of the island; visitors typically cross at the Nicosia or Agios Dometios checkpoints with a passport or EU ID. Crossings are routine, but check current requirements and car-insurance rules before you drive.

Local tips

  • St Hilarion castle is a real climb: hundreds of steps to the upper towers, and the view over the coast is the best on the island. Go in the morning.
  • The shipwreck museum inside Kyrenia castle holds a 4th-century-BC Greek trading ship, one of the oldest recovered vessels anywhere.
  • Bellapais Abbey, ten minutes above town, is at its quietest before the tour groups arrive mid-morning.
  • If you drive across, buy the temporary car insurance at the checkpoint; rental agreements often exclude the north, so check yours first.
